Team Coral's Art Project is Being Featured on CNN's Official Page

The art project, CNN: Call To Earth Living Oceans, Turning the Tide, which has been participated in by Team Coral, which consists of IELEV High School students, since 2022, features on CNN's official Web Page. Our students' ceramic work was inspired by the works of artist Courtney Mattison and will be mounted on the wall of our school. This artwork aims to draw attention to climate change as the corals fade. In this context, we are happy to announce the success our students have achieved in the CNN project in which they have participated.

Jugend Musiziert

Last weekend the regional competition of Jugend Musiziert took place at the Alman Lisesi. With pride and joy we can announce that our participants from İELEV Doğukan Özkaba in the category pop guitar with accompaniment Kuzey Koçdemir on bass won a first prize with 23 points (out of 25) with forwarding to the national competition in Cairo!

SALT Beyoğlu Exhibition

Visual arts students of IELEV Prep class visited the “90s Onstage” exhibition at SALT Beyoğlu between September 15, 2022 – February 12, 2023. The 90s Onstage uses the notion of performance as a key point of inquiry into the decade in question, opening multiple avenues for critical interpretation in relation to the history of the arts, culture, and entertainment in Turkey. It assembles an archive of materials related to the events that highlight performances as well as individual works. Gathered under the same canopy of investigation are photographs, objects, video recordings, sketches, and mock-ups in addition to correspondences, posters, and brochures from select events. Featuring a variety of production styles ranging from live performances to video clips and TV programs, the exhibition spans the years from 1988 to 1999 and extends into the early 2000s. With this trip, our students enjoyed getting to know modern art and consciously examining contemporary art and cultural objects. Our students, who visited the exhibition on a guided tour were informed about the artists and their works.

IELEV High School Visual Art Students in the Arter Museum

IELEV Private High School 10th grade Visual Arts students visited the exhibitions “This Play”, “Locus Solus”, “Bill Fontana: The New Voice of Io” and “Bill Fontana Silent Echoes: Notre Dame” in the Arter Museum. The group exhibition entitled “This Play” was formed by combining the works of 59 artists. Aiming to use the game maker and game disruptor aspects of art together, it consists of works which were made to recognize and investigate the breaking of rules, originality, courage and going beyond the norm of games through art. The “Locus Solus” exhibition was formed by the gathering of 27 artists. The aim of this exhibition is to reconcile the concept of 'nature', which it takes as its center, with different phenomena, concepts and senses. The works, created using different materials and methods, are inspired by the Latin phrase meaning "lonely place". The exhibition entitled “Bill Fontana: The New Voice of Io” was made by Bill Fontana, who started his career as a composer and later decided to 'listen to the silence'. Video and audio recordings taken at various locations in and around the Bosphorus, including underwater and the Basilica Cistern, were used in the production of the exhibition. These recordings were brought together and recorded using the method that the artist called 'revoicing'. Bill Fontana's Silent Echoes: Notre Dame exhibition makes the sounds of ten giant bells in Paris's famous Notre-Dame Cathedral, which were condemned to silence after the fire in 2019 as well as due to the CoronaVirus, to be heard via live transmission. Thanks to this trip, our students had the opportunity to get to know modern art more closely, as well as learn to find and recognize art in every part of life. Interpreting five different works of art with the museum guide during the tour, contributed to the awakening of aesthetic consciousness and the acquisition of an objective beauty perception in students.

His Name Is Not Necessary Exhibition

IELEV 9th Grade visual arts students, Creative Design and Photography Club students visited the exhibition “His Name Is Not Necessary” at the 17th Istanbul Biennial at the Abdülmecid Efendi Mansion with a guided tour program. The exhibition, which was opened only within the scope of the biennial, was highly appreciated by the audience, and the duration of the exhibition was extended until 11 December. Our students enjoyed getting to know modern art and consciously examining contemporary cultural and artistic objects. Our students, who visited the exhibition with the guide, were equipped with information about the artists and their works. Our creative design club students encountered new ideas that will inspire their future work. Our photography club students improved themselves by taking creative photographs of the works and the space.

IB Evaluation Process

Within the scope of the IB Evaluation process of our IELEV Private High School completed the IB Evaluation Workshop, in which our valued parents, who are among the school stakeholders, were included, in a very pleasant way. Our class parent representatives and İELEV Private High School Parents Council participated in the 3-day workshops. While our parents received important information about the IB Philosophy, they contributed to the revision of school policies and became a part of the school development plan. During the workshops, our parents had the opportunity to get to know the teaching approaches we are applying in the activities prepared by our school's IB DP Coordinator Ali Batuhan Bardakçı and CAS Coordinator Doruk Karabulut.

CNN Bookmark

We are pleased to announce our students’ participation in the “#CalltoEarth Living Oceans: Turning the Tide” project initiated by CNN in 2022 by IELEV High School’s “Creative Design” Club. Their bookmark designs were inspired by the way the seas should be, and by the mysterious atmosphere of the oceans. The members of the Creative Design Club have designed their bookmarks to ‘bookmark' the deteriorating state of the seas, and to bring attention to this problem in a hopeful way. #CalltoEarthDay

Team Coral has Joined CNN Earth Project

The students of IELEV High School have joined CNN’s international “Call to Earth Living Oceans: Turning the Tide” project as Team Coral. The biggest reason they wish to participate in this awareness project is to draw attention to the fragility and importance of marine life. Oceans and marine life are one of the most severely damaged areas of the world today. With more than 8 million tons of plastic waste entering our oceans every year, ocean creatures, marine life and nature are facing major damage. In addition to the garbage we dump into the oceans, warming and acidifying seawater is ending the lives of fragile creatures such as coral and small fish. Our student group aims to convey the awareness of these facts to large masses through art. They have chosen Courtney Mattison as their model artist. The reason they chose Mattison is because of her deep history with ocean life and its conservation. Her multiple exhibitions, including "Fragile Earth" and "We the People", showcase global warming, the human impact on nature, and the fragile beauty of ocean life. Team Coral students aim to make anyone that sees their artwork stop and think once again about ocean life and what they can do to help it.

IELEV Private High School is at IB Global Conference

Unlike other IB schools in Turkey, IELEV Private High School attended the International Baccalaureate Organization Global Conference held in The Hague, Netherlands between 6-8 October 2022, with the status of a GIB school. Representing our high school, our IB DP Coordinator Ali Batuhan Bardakçı, Turkish Language and Literature Department Head Pemra Şahbaz, English and Biology Teacher Birnur Avşar, TOK and World History Teacher Filiz Yıldırım and Mathematics Teacher Seda Taner participated in many workshops under the theme of "embracing innovation and inspiring actions". They completed this unique conference program where the newest ideas and practices were shared by engaging in constructive discussions in more than fifty training sessions conducted within the scope of the conference. They shared ideas and collaborated across institutions to explore how we can prepare the next generation and equip them with the skills needed to succeed in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

Global Climate Crisis

At IELEV, we aim to be open-minded, principled and creative thinkers. That’s why we decided to create a piece of art for theCall to Earth Day, reflective of our passion for the fight against climate change. As former US President Barack Obama once said, “No challenge poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change”. We have taken this to heart and symbolized the devastation caused by climate change by painting one of our school walls with a polar bear, a species amongst Earth’s most majestic mammals and one whose habitat is being destroyed by humanity’s reckless actions. We have met every Tuesday and Wednesday to work on this project. We came up with the idea for the painting and it was all hands on from there. After the sketching was finished, we got out our brushes and got to painting. A common misconception is that polar bears have white fur when in reality the fur on them is clear. Some of the light that hits the polar bear gets trapped and creates the snow white fur everyone associates with them. With this fact in mind, we wanted to experiment with the color of the polar bear. We used multiple tones of contrasting colors to signify the disturbance in nature that climate change causes. You can see the finished project on the ground floor of our school.

SALT Galata Exhibition

The Grade 9 students of IELEV High School visited the exhibition “Teneffüs” and the SALT Research Centre at SALT Galata on Wednesday 13th of April. Aykan Safoğlu’s practice is based on investigations of the formal and conceptual possibilities within the transitions between still and moving images. In Recess, which is the last of SALT’s The Sequential program, the artist draws on notions of indebtedness and asset borrowed from economics and looks at the reverberations of these terms in his own life story. The students toured the SALT Galata Exhibition with the museum guide. The students were taught about the digital and physical archives at the SALT Research Center and their condition and use. During our trip, the importance of visual literacy, perception and aesthetic awareness in the field of visual arts was highlighted, while at the same time our students were given the opportunity to develop conscious visual behavior for contemporary culture and art objects.

The International Public Speaking Competition(ESU)-Turkey

The International Public Speaking Competition(ESU)-Turkey, which first took place in 2009, held once again on Saturday 19th March 2022 on Zoom Platform. The competition brought the best young speakers of 17 schools of Turkey and among the 17 participants Doğa Şahin of İELEV High School became the national winner of ESU-Turkey with her speech connected to the theme of “Our real choices are made without us realising it”. There will also be cultural exchange event during the finals among more than 50 countries across the globe. The finals week of the IPSC will take place from9thto 13thMay2022 this year. We wish Doğa the best of Luck!

IELEV Photography Club at Ara Güler Museum

IELEV Photography Club students visited the exhibition by our esteemed photographer Ara Güler in Istanbul on Thursday, December 2nd. Before the highly efficient exhibition, our students received valuable information about the architect and architecture of the Galataport Campus, Istanbul Modern Building from the parent of IELEV, Mrs. Yaşmak Kemer. After taking the photographs of Istanbul's rich historical structure, İELEV students visited Ara Guler's Istanbul exhibition. The director of the museum informed IELEV students about the artist and his photographs. Throughout this journey, IELEV students have been ready to learn and practice fine arts by consciously viewing the contemporary cultural artifacts that are among the main objectives of the Fine Arts Department.

Turkish History of Growth

Our Prep Class students were inspired by the works in the story book "Turkish History of Growth", which they read and analyzed in the Turkish Language and Literature class, and made bookmarks using recycled materials as part of the "Call to Earth" day activities. While analyzing these stories and doing such work, our students have had the opportunity to develop their “creativity, reflectivity, thought processes and inquiry” profiles from the IB Learner Profile.

The Grade 10 students of IELEV High School visited he Sakıp Sabancı Museum

The Grade 10 students of IELEV High School visited the exhibitions “Past Present Istanbul” and "From the Reformation to Republic: Master Artists, Artist Students” at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum on Friday 15 October. The exhibition“Past Present Istanbul”brings together works about Istanbul by 22 artist alumni from Sabancı University's Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design program. The 22 exhibiting artists responded to the call of the artist Murat Germen, also an instructor at Sabancı University, all assessing Istanbul’s situation. The exhibition also plays a very important role in raising the awareness of art and artists about the environmental problems we live in and in finding sustainable solutions. “From Reformation to Republic: Master Artists, Artist Students”presents the historical journey of the art of painting in Turkey and features a total of 115 artworks from the SSM Painting Collection Artwork by the masters and their apprentices, who acquired mastership by following in their masters’ footsteps, will be displayed side-by-side. The exhibitionFrom Reformation to Republic: Master Artists, Artist Studentsallows us to trace the social and economic transformation of the country, via the late-discovered but quickly adopted medium of painting. During our trip, the importance of visual literacy, perception and aesthetic awareness in the field of visual arts was highlighted, while at the same time our students were given the opportunity to develop conscious visual behaviour for contemporary culture and art objects.

School trip to the cultural heritage of the Istanbul Metropolitan Region

IELEV Photography Club students; Under the guidance of architectural historian Kıvanç Başak; starting from the Spice Bazaar, which was built during the construction of the New Mosque to generate income for this mosque; considered one of the most successful examples of Ottoman Architecture and tile art, the "Rüstem Pasha Mosque'', which has protected the inhabitants of the city from external attacks since its construction and it is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the "Land Walls" of Byzantine and Ottoman civilizations. He guided the "Istanbul Heritage '' tour by visiting the "Great Byzantine Bukaleon Palace '' from the 5th century, which is considered as a heritage to Istanbul. During the trip, the importance of these monuments and cultural assets in terms of urban culture and art history was emphasized, and at the same time, our students were made aware of the heritage items found in their city, which are very important for world cultural heritage.

Istanbul Images in Art History

IELEV High School Photography Club students attended the seminar titled “Istanbul Images in Art History” by Architectural Historian Kıvanç Başak on Thursday, October 7th. On Saturday, October 9, 2021, "Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Cultural Heritage Site Trip" will be organized for our Photography Club students. Thanks to the seminar, our students learned about the "Restoration of the Architecture of Historical Places" and created awareness before this trip. We would like to express our gratitude and respect to the organizer of the seminar, Architectural Historian, Kıvanç Başak.
