The Extended Essay is mandatory for all GIB students. It is an independent, self-directed piece of research essay that is presented as a formal piece of sustained academic writing containing no more than 4,000 words. The Extended Essay is accompanied by a reflection form of no more than 500 words. It takes approximately 40 hours of independent work from the students and helps students to demonstrate all the IB Learner Profiles and ATL skills. Students write the EE on a topic of their special interest, which is also related to one of their six DP subjects. It can also be written as an interdisciplinary as World Studies Extended Essay. The topic and the subject are chosen by the student in consultation with a supervisor in the school and with the help of the Extended Essay Coordinator. It is externally assessed and, in combination with the grade for Theory of Knowledge, contributes up to three points to the total score of the final GIB Diploma.
