IB ENGLISH B (SL)

Course description and aims:

The IB DP language B-English course provides students with the opportunity to acquire English and to promote an understanding of other cultures through the study of language. Language B –English is designed for students who possess a degree of knowledge and experience in the target language.

The aims of the language B –English standard level course are to:

  • develop students’ intercultural understanding
  • enable students to understand and use the language they have studied in a range of contexts and for a variety of purposes
  • encourage, through the study of texts and social interaction, an awareness and appreciation of the different perspectives of people from other cultures
  • develop students’ awareness of the role of language in relation to other areas of knowledge
  • develop students’ awareness of the relationship between the languages and cultures with which they are familiar
  • provide students with a basis for further study, work and leisure through the use of English
  • provide the opportunity for enjoyment, creativity and intellectual stimulation through English

Assessment Information:

External Assessment:
• Paper 1: a choice from three tasks with a variety of audiences, contexts and purposes. Each task is based on a different theme from the syllabus.. Students write a response of 250–400 words to one of the tasks (%25)

• Paper 2: It is divided into two separate sections: listening (three audio passages) and reading (three written passages) covering different topics drawn from the five themes.(50%)

Internal Assessment:
• 
Individual Oral: Preparing a presentation on a chosen photo. Then having a discussion with the teacher based on the presentation (25%)

The IB DP language B HL English course provides students with the opportunity to strengthen their English language skills and to promote an understanding of other cultures through the study of language. Language B HL English is designed for students who have proficient knowledge and experience in the target language.

The aims of the language B English higher level course are to:

  • develop students’ intercultural understanding
  • enable students to understand and use the language they have studied in a range of contexts and for a variety of purposes
  • encourage, through the study of texts and social interaction, an awareness and appreciation of the different perspectives of people from other cultures
  • develop students’ awareness of the role of language in relation to other areas of knowledge
  • develop students’ awareness of the relationship between the language and culture with which they are familiar
  • provide students with a basis for further study, work and leisure through the use of English
  • provide the opportunity for enjoyment, creativity and intellectual stimulation through English

*  develop students’ comprehension and analytical skills of two literary works originally written in English

Assessment Information:

External Assessment:
• Paper 1: Assesses the writing skills of the student.  Students write a response of 450-600 words from one of three tasks. Each task is based on a different theme from the syllabus. (%25)

• Paper 2:Assesses the reading and listening skills of the student.  Students listen to three audio passages and read three written passages taken from the five themes in the syllabus.(50%)

Internal Assessment:

• Individual Oral: Based on an extract form one of the literary works studied in class, students present their findings and opinions.  This is followed by a discussion connecting one or more of the five themes to the literary text. (25%)
